Self Myofascial Release
By Dean Ahmad
Are you one of the many if not majority of people suffering from back pains, knee pains, hip pains etc? Most of the causes can be pin pointed to poor posture. There are many different classifications for a person’s posture, be it excessive kyphosis (rounding of the upper spine) excessive lordosis (an inward curvature of a portion of the vertebral column) or flat back (absence of curves throughout the spine).
Posture can be defined the relative arrangement of the parts of the body. Good posture is the state of muscular and skeletal balance which protects the supporting structures in the body against injury or progressive deformity irrespective of standing erect, lying, and squatting whether working or resting.
So how does Self Myofascial Release or SMFR help with improving posture? Before I explain what SMFR is, we would also have to understand what fascia and the Kinetic chain is and how it is linked to posture.
Fascia is located between the skin and the underlying structure of muscle and bone, it is a seamless web of connective tissue that covers and connects the muscles, organs, and skeletal structures in our body. Muscle and fascia are united forming the myofascia system.
The kinetic chain is made up of the soft tissue system (muscle, tendon, ligament, and fascia), neural system (nerves and CNS), and articular system (joints) 6.
Always remember that the kinetic chain works as an integrated functional unit. If one segment of this chain is not functioning efficiently, then the other components must compensate, leading to tissue overload, fatigue, and faulty movement patterns, and finally resulting in poor posture and injury. For example, muscle tightness restricts the range of motion that a joint may be moved. Because of muscle restriction, joint motion is altered and ultimately, neuromuscular efficiency is compromised, which leads to poor movement patterns, fatigue and causing injury in the future.
Self Myofascial Release works somewhat similar to manual massage techniques. SMFR stretches the fascia and releasing bonds between fascia, integument, muscles, and bones are mainly applied; with the goal of eliminating pain, increasing range of motion and balancing the body. The fascia is manipulated, directly or indirectly, allowing the connective tissue fibers to reorganize themselves in a more flexible, functional fashion.
BENEFITS OF SELF-MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
Correct muscle imbalances
Joint range of motion
Muscle soreness
Neuromuscular hypertonicity
Extensibility of musculotendinous junction
Neuromuscular efficiency
Maintain normal functional muscular length
Relieve joint stress
